Here is a little video I made for a friend about heating from underneath to get stubborn solder to flow. I mention in the video that I had already soldered this piece, but there was a gap. So that's what I'm doing is closing that gap and I was trying to do it before I put it in the pickle. That doesn't always work, but this time it did.
We do this for those times when heating above just doesn't work. It might be because of a thick backplate and to keep that hot, underneath is most likely to be more successful. Or it might be when you have embellishments, like flowers, leaves, feathers or silver balls. That is also a good way to get those guys to stay put.
